Paint Correction in Cornwall

Paintwork needs more than making it shiny.

Swirl marks, wash marring, holograms and scratches all need to be understood before a machine polisher touches the paint.

Sunshine Valets provides professional paint correction across Cornwall, with a controlled detailing studio near Helston for more involved correction work.

From Deck to Driveway.

Correct the paint, don't cover it up

Paint correction uses controlled machine polishing to remove or reduce defects in the upper surface of automotive paint.

Swirl marks, wash marring, oxidation, holograms and some scratches disrupt the way light reflects from the surface. Correcting those defects restores clarity, depth and gloss rather than simply hiding them temporarily.

But removing defects means removing a very small amount of material.

That is why the aim is not to chase every mark regardless of the cost. The aim is to achieve the best realistic improvement while preserving the paintwork underneath.

What can paint correction improve?

Swirl marks

Fine scratches commonly introduced by automatic car washes, dealer preparation and poor washing techniques.

Wash marring

Lighter scratching and hazing that becomes especially obvious in direct sunlight or inspection lighting.

Holograms

Machine polishing trails often left behind by previous polishing or bodyshop work.

Light scratches

Many shallow scratches can be removed or significantly reduced where there is enough paint available to do so safely.

Oxidation and fading

Dull or weathered paint can often be improved considerably through controlled polishing and refinement.

Poor previous polishing

Sanding marks, compounding haze and inconsistent previous correction work can often be improved where the paint condition allows.

Three levels of correction

Not every car needs the same process.

The level of correction depends on the condition of the paintwork, the defects present and how far it is sensible to take the finish.

THE CORRECTION STAGE 1

From £400

For paintwork carrying the swirl marks and wash marring left by years of supermarket car washes, dealer preparation and well-meaning but unsafe washing.

Stage 1 is for vehicles where the main problem is a tired, marked or flat-looking finish and a significant improvement can be achieved without moving into a more involved correction process.

Typical reasons to choose Stage 1:

  • Swirl marks
  • Wash marring
  • Loss of gloss and clarity
  • Dealer preparation marks
  • General accumulated paint defects
Book Stage 1

THE CORRECTION STAGE 2

From £800

For paintwork beyond what a single polishing stage can realistically recover.

Stage 2 allows more involved correction and refinement for defects such as deeper scratches, holograms, sanding marks and poor previous machine work.

Typical reasons to choose Stage 2:

  • Deeper paint defects
  • Holograms
  • Previous poor machine polishing
  • Sanding marks
  • Paint requiring additional correction and refinement

Typically requires 1–2 days depending on vehicle size and condition.

Book Stage 2

THE MULTI-STAGE CORRECTION

From £1,000

For the few vehicles that need more than a standard correction detail.

Multi-stage correction is intended for heavily scratched paintwork, rare vehicles or owners looking for the highest sensible level of correction, refinement and finish.

This is not about chasing every defect regardless of paint thickness. It is about taking the finish as far as the paintwork safely allows.

Typical reasons to choose Multi-Stage:

  • Heavily scratched or damaged paint
  • Complex previous repair work
  • Rare, classic or special vehicles
  • Projects requiring extensive correction and refinement
  • Customers looking for the highest realistic level of finish

Typically requires 2–3 days depending on vehicle size and condition.

Before the polishing starts

  1. 01

    Wash and decontamination

The paintwork needs to be thoroughly clean before defects can be properly assessed or corrected.

  2. 02

    Inspect the paint

We assess the condition of the finish, scratches, swirl marks, previous repairs and evidence of earlier polishing work.

  3. 03

    Establish the right process

Different paint systems and different panels can respond differently to polishing. The correction process is chosen around the vehicle rather than forcing every car through the same combination.

  4. 04

    Correct

Each area is worked methodically to remove or reduce defects while preserving the finish underneath.

  5. 05

    Refine

Where the correction process requires it, the paint is further refined to restore clarity and remove polishing haze.

  6. 06

    Protect

Once corrected, the finish can be protected appropriately to help preserve the work that has been carried out.

Knowing when to stop matters

A deeper scratch is not automatically a challenge to polish harder.

If removing a defect would require taking away more clear coat than is sensible, the correct decision may be to reduce it rather than remove it completely.

And some damage needs paintwork rather than polishing.

Sunshine Valets has access to a professional detailing studio and bodyshop at Coverack Bridges, near Helston, with a professional vehicle painter onsite.

That means scratches, paint damage and defects can be assessed for what they actually need.

If machine polishing is not the right solution, we can recommend paint repair, panel repair, bodywork or refinishing instead of trying to polish a problem that requires a different process.

Enquire About Paintwork

Experience that goes beyond detailing

My background in paintwork started long before Sunshine Valets.

I spent two years studying vehicle refinishing before completing an apprenticeship at a custom car garage specialising in classic Volkswagens.

I then worked in a vehicle bodyshop before joining Pendennis Shipyard in Falmouth as a yacht painter and refinisher.

From there I moved into professional yacht crew, working aboard superyachts measuring up to 124 metres and caring for high-value finishes where preparation and consistency matter.

Today that experience shapes the way I approach vehicle paintwork through Sunshine Valets.

It means looking beyond whether paint is simply glossy and understanding what can realistically be corrected, what should be left alone and when refinishing is the better option.

Once it's corrected, protect it

Paint correction improves the finish itself.

Protection then helps preserve that corrected surface and makes ongoing maintenance easier.

Ceramic coating can be added after suitable correction where longer-lasting protection is wanted.

Questions, answered

Yes. Swirl marks are one of the most common defects addressed through paint correction. How much correction is appropriate depends on their severity, the paint system and the overall condition of the vehicle.

Some scratches can be removed completely and others can be significantly reduced. Deeper damage may extend too far into the paint to remove safely through polishing alone.

Stage 1 is aimed at the swirl marks, wash marring and general defects found on many vehicles. Stage 2 is for paintwork requiring a more involved correction and refinement process, including deeper scratches, holograms, sanding marks or poor previous polishing.

You do not need to diagnose the paintwork yourself. Send clear photographs and some information about the vehicle and what you would like to improve. We can recommend the most appropriate starting point.

The time depends on the vehicle and the level of correction required. Stage 2 typically requires 1–2 days and Multi-Stage Correction typically requires 2–3 days. Stage 1 timings depend on the size and condition of the vehicle.

No. Removing every defect is not always safe or realistic. Some deeper scratches are better reduced rather than completely removed, while others require paint repair or refinishing.

Defects physically removed during correction do not simply reappear, but new swirl marks and scratches can be introduced afterwards through washing and everyday use. Correct maintenance and protection therefore matter.

Ceramic coating is a good option where longer-lasting protection and easier maintenance are wanted after correction. It is not compulsory, and the appropriate protection can be discussed as part of the job.

Yes, but older vehicles can require more cautious assessment because of previous repairs, repainted panels, paint thickness and different paint systems. Preserving the finish is more important than chasing unnecessary defect removal.

Sunshine Valets has access to a professional studio and bodyshop near Helston with a professional vehicle painter onsite. Where a defect requires paint repair, bodywork or refinishing rather than polishing, we can recommend the appropriate next step.
